It's that time of year again! We hope you'll renew your CLSA membership and support our local sailing community. Our membership dues will remain the same this year. A student membership is $35. An individual membership is $70. A household family membership is $95.

To renew: Log in to Wild Apricot by visiting CLSASailing.org. Click on your avatar in the upper righthand corner of the screen and go to your profile. Choose the renew membership button. It's very easy. Also, we will be sending renewal email reminders starting February -- you can just click on the link in the renewal email and renew. While you're in the system, please take an extra few moments and update your bio, group participation and subscribe to forums.

To purchase a 2022 parking permit sticker: Log in to Wild Apricot by visiting CLSASailing.org. In the drop-down menu under “Member Area,” navigate to the Storage page. Order and pay for your sticker and then follow the instructions in your email. You must provide CLSA proof of liability insurance of at least $500,000 per incident.

Note: CLSA is no longer accepting checks as payment and requires electronic payment for membership dues and storage permit stickers.

Our CLSA digest emails will be appearing less frequently in 2022. We will instead be sending event invites through Wild Apricot, and sending a monthly digest email with other announcements. All club members will receive invites for club-wide events. If you would like to receive (or stop receiving) invites for particular events, you must update your group participation in your member profile. Our groups include Laser/Sunfish sailing, cabin boat sailing, Thistle sailing, Flying Scot sailing, kiteboarding, windsurfing, buoy racing, distance racing, volunteers – education classes, volunteers – introductory lesson instructors, volunteers – lawn mowing, and family fun days.

To update your group participation, log in to https://www.clsasailing.org/ and click on the avatar in the upper right corner of the page again. Then click on “View Profile” and select “Edit Profile.”

You can find all CLSA events on the CLSA calendar at https://www.clsasailing.org/calendar.

There was a time in our recent history when a large group of CLSA sailors traveled to attend a full-day US Sailing Race Management Seminar. The training was excellent and our race management capabilities improved drastically almost overnight. It's been more than a few years and this training is probably something we should encourage more regularly. This training is perfect for racing enthusiasts or recreational sailors who have an interest in volunteering on the race committee team. Since the onset of Covid-19, these seminars are now offered online and more often.

    Upcoming Seminars

    Description:

    • The seminar consists of three live 2.5-hour Zoom sessions. All sessions are 7-9:30 p.m. Eastern Time (4-6:30 p.m. Pacific Time).

    • There is approximately 30-60 minutes of pre-course work required before each session. Attendance in all three sessions is required to complete and pass the course.

    • About five days before your course begins, you will receive an email from US Sailing inviting you to participate in the course. Please click the "Get Started" link to complete your profile and access the course materials.

    • The lead instructor will email you with course information. Course fee: $38.

    • 1-year membership to US Sailing $65

The Winter Classroom Series was introduced in the winter of 2020/2021.  Our beginner and intermediate Zoom classes were very popular and resulted in a large number of new sailors following through by signing up for lessons and/or the small boat introduction to sailing class.   It helped promote the Clinton Lake Sailing Association and contributed to getting new sailors into our programs in force and helped grow our membership.  Several of the recorded sessions from last winter can be viewed on the Winter Classroom Series page on the CLSA website.

The initial focus of the Winter Classroom Series for 2021/2022 will be on race committee training and support boat operation.   We're working on publishing a series of training videos that people can watch at their convenience during the holiday season.  Once we get through the holidays, we'll schedule a happy hour or two so our race committee team can all get together for fun Q&A sessions.  Finally we'll plan some hands-on training for the race committee boat and support boat in April before the busy sailing season gets started.  Volunteering for the race committee or helping out on the safety boat during one of our classes is a fun way to support the club.

In addition to race committee and support boat training, John Hearn has expressed an interest in teaching members gelcoat repair.   We are tentatively hoping to include that in our Winter Classroom Series, but may save that for the summer.  Please watch for email updates as we make program announcements and publish new training videos to the Winter Classroom Series page on the CLSA website.  Stay tuned...

When the sailing season ends at Clinton Lake, the Mid Illini Sail and Power Squadron offers classes taught by CLSA members.   The Mid Illini Sail and Power Squadron is part of America's Boating Club/US Power Squadron.  Beginner, intermediate or advanced — whatever your skill level, ABC's in-depth boating education courses will boost your knowledge and confidence on the water.

The US Power Squadron has a 100-year history of training sailors.  The completion of Power Squadron courses and designations are recognized by other national organizations.  Mid Illini sponsors a flotilla trip to the British Virgin Islands every two years that is attended by many CLSA members.  The cost to join Mid Illini and take classes is $82 annually plus textbook costs, typically $40 per class.   The recommended BVI flotilla training courses include Boat HandlingMarine NavigationCruise Planning and Sail courses along with on the water exercises.  Those with extensive sailing experience can opt-out of the Sail course.  These courses provide sailors with the knowledge and the confidence to be able to successfully charter 40-foot yachts in the British Virgin Islands.

Please visit the Mid Illini website and the America's Boating Club website to learn more and take advantage of their classroom training.
